BORROTO CRUZ, Radamés y SALAS PEREA, Ramón S. El reto por la calidad y la pertinencia: la evaluación desde una visión cubana. Educ Med Super [online]. 1999, vol.13, n.1, pp. 70-79. ISSN 0864-2141.
The social needs of the contemporary world as well as the problems influencing on medical education and its incidence as regards the pertinence and academic excellence of our universities are stressed. The world trends of evaluation in higher medical education are assessed and the milestones supporting the increase of the quality of human resources in health, such as accreditation, evaluation of competence an professional performance, the educational processes, and the postgraduate academic credits are defined. The experiences of the National Health System in Cuba on institutional evaluation, its juridical basis, its executors and subjects, and the procedures and methods used for its implementation are presented. It is explained how the evaluation of competence and professional performance is the essential evaluative axis, since the "human resources" is the fundamental element on analyzing the quality of a health product or service. The experiences obtained during the carrying out of comprehensive inspections at the Teaching and Research Area are analyzed. This has been a practical variant of educational institutional evaluation. Finally, comments are made on the results obtained in the application of the Cuban model of analysis and evaluation of the quality of medical education and practice.
