Resumen

GATO CARDENAS, Yohana et al. Characterization of Cuban isolates of the Metarhizium anisopliae species complex with pathogenic activity against Cylas formicarius Fabricius (Coleoptera: Brentidae). Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2016, vol.31, n.1, pp. 50-56. ISSN 2224-4697.

The objective of this work was to determine morphological, cultural, and physiological characteristics of seven Cuban isolates of Metarhizium spp. with pathogenic activities against Cylas formicarius Fabricius. Morphology of the colonies was described and conidia measured. Fungal growth rate and sporulation level on different culture media were calculated. Growth of the fungal isolates exposed to different temperatures (28, 30, 32, 34 and 37oC) was also determined. The isolates exhibited pathogenic activity against C. fornicarius, and, according to their description, they were shown to belong to the M. anisopliae species complex. The most favorable temperature range for the isolates to grow was 28-30oC. LBM-5 A and LBM-10 were the isolates showing the highest growth rate at the temperatures and culture media evaluated. The highest conidium production by LBM-5 and LBM-267 was obtained on the Complete Medium, Saboraud Dextrose Agar, and Malt Extract Agar.

Palabras clave : Metarhizium spp.; Cylas formicarius; biological control.
