The aim of this study was the biochemical, physiological, and pathogenic identification of bacterial isolates associated with the symptoms of soft rot and blackleg in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plantations. A total of 15 isolates were obtained from diseased potato stem and tuber samples collected in the crop fields in the municipalities of Quivican and Güines, Mayabeque province, Cuba, between November 2015 and December 2016.   Morphological, biochemical, and physiological studies were performed for identification of the isolates that where additionally characterized pathogenically on potato (cultivar ‘Atlas’) tubers and green pepper (Capsicum annuun L. cultivar ‘Albena’) leaves. The isolates were identified within the bacterial genera Pectobacterium, Dickeya, Pseudomonas, Pantoea, and Bacillus. Only four isolates presented biochemical and physiological characteristics corresponding to species within the genera Pectobacterium and Dickeya. The four isolates showed pathogenicity on potato tubers, but only one of them, isolate 4, did on green pepper leaves. These results sustained the presence of different bacteria associated with the symptoms of soft rot and blackleg in the studied areas.
