RIVERO FERNANDEZ, Fidel; EXPOSITO MARTIN, Tania; RODRIGUEZ ALONSO, María Eugenia  y  LAZO DIAZ, Idania. Amputation rate  as caused by diabetic foot in a primary health care district. AMC [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.2, pp. 94-102. ISSN 1025-0255.

The lower extremity amputation rate due to the syndrome of diabetic foot was assessed Ignacio Agramonte primary health care district, city of Camagüey,between January 1998 and December 2003, through patient profiling. Out of nine patients, mostly females over 50, five mixed diabetes patients had their foot amputated, thus accouting for 55 % of the rate. Patients who had been suffering from diabetes mellitus for more than fifteen years were at a significantly higher risk. Leg artery occlusion proved a significant risk factor as well-out of the eight patients (88, 8 % of the rate) suffering form it seven (81, 5 % of the rate) showed a distal occlusive pattern and were therefore amputated on the leg and foot. Contributing factors wee hyperglicemia, peripheral neuropathy, a sendentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, and previous amputations.
