A cross-sectional descriptive study with the objective to determine the knowledge about intrauterine device's related to the contraception staff in Nuevitas, was performed from November the 1st, 2004 to May 31st, 2006. The sample was constituted by 144 health professionals to which a survey was filled out to them with the selected variables according to the bibliography revised, which became the final primary register of the investigation. Important results were obtained like the ignorance of the updated classification of intrauterine device's (100%), deficiencies in the knowledge of when it should be inserted (65.40%), at what age it should be used (80.00%), duration of adverse reactions (98.8%), efficacy (54.11%) and time of renewal (95.8%). Favorable results were found related to the knowledge of the contraindications, the ideal moment to insert it in the postpartum and return to fertility.
