Background: At present cataract surgery is carry out by means of surgical techniques trying to obtain the smaller possible post-surgical astigmatism to achieve a fast recovery of the vision. Objective: To compare the degree of the induced astigmatism that produces the scleral and corneal incisions. Method: An explanatory observational study was carried out in patients attended in the Ophthalmology consultation at «Manuel Ascunce Domenech» University Hospital of Camagüey province. The universe was constituted by 372 patients and the sample remained conformed by 50 patients with presenile and senile diagnosis that received surgical treatment with the phacoemulsification technique from January 2006 to May 2006 utilizing incisions of scleral and corneal type, the last one by clear cornea. Results: The preoperative visual acuity with correction was among 0.2-0.1 in 18 patients; a considerable increase of the postoperative final vision of 0.7-1.0 in all the patients was appreciated, which was between excellent and good. Conclusions: The induced astigmatism was greater in the corneal incision than in the scleral one that is why we recommend the use of this way of approach to improve the visual quality of the patient
