The possible antiepyleptic action of decoctions of dry leaves of C. nocturnum by acute intraperitoneal administration in experimental epilepsy models induced by isoniazid, picrotoxin and electroshock (in mice) and in the epyleptic focus induced by the topic cortical administration of penicillin in curarized rats is investigated. The extract at 30 % prolonged significantly the latency of appearance of seizures and death caused by isoniazid, but not those induced by electroshock or picrotoxin. The extract at 5 % reduced markedly the amplitude of spikes of the penicillin focus. These results support or justify the traditional use of this plant in convulsant disorders.
