Introduction: temporomandibular disorders affect the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint and associated structures. Several indexes are currently used to determine the degree of dysfunction in these disorders, among which is the Helkimo index modified by Maglione. Objective: to identify the degree of temporomandibular dysfunction in patients over 19 years according to this index. Methods: a descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in 197 patients attended in "Manuel Cedeño" Dental Specialty Clinic of Bayamo, Granma province, from February 2009 to June 2013. Among the selected variates were degree of dysfunction, age, sex and clinical manifestations. Results: moderate dysfunction, mostly in females of 40-49 years of age, predominated in the case material as well as disorders of joint function and muscle pain as the most frequent clinical manifestations.
