Introduction: asphyxia in newborn is a frequent event in neonatal units and one of the most important causes of mortality and neurological sequelae in the newborn at term, which may lead to alterations on the psychomotor development of children. Objective: to describe the psychomotor development at one year of life for patients with a history of asphyxia at birth. Method: a cohort study was performed in infants with a history of asphyxia at birth between January and December 2011 at Vladimir Ilich Lenin Hospital. Psychomotor development at one year of age with the Gesell scale was determined. Results: 44.4 % of 18 studied patients had normal psychomotor development at one year of age; however 55.6 % of patients had some type of alteration, distributed as follows: 16.7 % showed mild psychomotor retardation, 27.8 % moderate and 11.1 % severe. Moderate delay predominated. Psychomotor disorders were related to male sex, cesarean delivery and Apgar score at five minutes of life. These alterations were more frequent in children with good birth weight. Conclusions: infants with birth asphyxia showed disorders in psychomotor development at one year
