Studies conducted during the last decades have tried to sustain the association between periodontal disease and ischemic heart disease. Experiments in animals have shown that oral inoculation of periodontal pathogens has developed accelerated atherosclerosis. With the aim of synthesizing subject information, a bibliographic review of scientific articles in national and international databases such as SciELO Regional, PubMed/MedLine, Cochrane, and EBSCO was carried out using the following descriptors: periodontal disease and ischemic cardiopathy, periodontitis and ischemic cardiopathy, periodontal disease and ischemic heart disease, periodontal treatment and risk factors. As to what was consulted, periodontal disease may constitute an additional risk factor for the onset of ischemic heart disease. Periodontal therapy can reduce cardiovascular risk, although the evidences found so far are not enough.
