Resumen

SELL LLUVERAS, Jorge  y  MONTEJO, Lidermys. Search for endocrine disorders in patients with premature ovarian failure. Rev Cubana Endocrinol [online]. 2001, vol.12, n.3, pp. 145-150. ISSN 1561-2953.

62 premature ovarian failures (POF) of non iatrogenic cause were studied to know the frequency of endocrine disorders in these patients and whether or not the routine screening of such disorders is recommendable. 14 women with POF of iatrogenic cause were excluded. A complete medical history of those women included in the study was made and total tiroxin, thyroid stimulating hormone, thyroid anticromosomal antibodies, glycaemia, total calcium, phosphates in serum and urine of 24 hours were measured. They also underwent suprarenal stimulation test with corticotrophin (ACTH). Simple X-rays of the sella turcica and CAT of the hypophysis were indicated, too. Euthyroid goiter was confirmed in 13 of the 62 patients (20.9 %) and some type of thyroid disorder was found in 18 of them (29 %). In 36 % of the individuals that underwent the stimulation test with ACTH, the cortisol response was null or diminished, though no clinical manifestations of hormone deficit were observed. There were no alterations of fasting glycaemia, calcium, or phosphates. A hypophysis microadenoma was detected in 4 of the 62 cases (6.4 %). To conclude, the results showed that it is not common to find alterations of fasting glycaemia or of the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus among women with POF. As the thyroid and adrenal disorders are usual, their routine screening is recommended in these patients. The frequency of hypophysis microadenomas suggests that it should be searched in every woman with POF.
