SANCHEZ LEON, Mayra; RODRIGUEZ PORTO, Ana Liz y MARTINEZ VALDES, Leonardo Lino. Lipid disorders: an updating. Rev Cubana Endocrinol [online]. 2003, vol.14, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2953.
Dyslipidemias are frequent metabolic disorders that are an important risk factor for diseases and have atherosclerosis as anatomical substrate. The particularly negative effect of high plasma lipid levels is well documented as to the occurrence and progression of the coronary disease (primary and secondary prevention). The adequate management entails knowledge of the desirable low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels according to the cardiovascular risk stratification of the patient. Regardless of the risk category, the treatment recommends therapeutic changes in the lifestyle whereas drug treatment is reserved for those patients who did not succeed in attaining the proposed goals and for high-risk patients. The present review intends to update the fundamental aspects related to classification, diagnosis and treatment of dyslipidemias.
