In order to investigate the behavior of mortality in Centro Habana municipality, a cross-sectional study was conducted taking into consideration the information obtained from the death certificates of those persons who died from 1993 to 1998. The annual average mortality rates were calculated in the newborn infant per 1 000 live births, among those between 1 and 4 years of age per l0 000 children at that age, and in those aged 5-9 and 10-14 per 100 000. The exceeding mortality was also calculated in each age group of the municipality and a comparison was made with the situation in the province of Havana City. Differences were found between mortality in the municipality and in the province. It was also observed that the death risk in all age groups, excepting in children between the age of 5 and 9 and 10 and 14, was higher at the municipality, as welll as the death risk due to violent and non-violent causes.
