HIDALGO VELASQUEZ, José; ORTEGA VALDES, María Elena; MORALES JIMENEZ, Lesbel  y  PIMIENTA PEGUERO, Milagro. Microdoses of ketamine to prevent postoperative pain. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.3, pp. 11-20. ISSN 1561-3194.

Despite knowledge of physiology and pharmacology of pain releivers and the development of more effective techniques to control postoperative pain, many patients still experience pain. Effectiveness of small doses of preoperative betamine was assessed to prevent postoperative pain. A prospective and longitudinal study, with analytical design in the service of anesthesiology at Abel Santamaria Cuadrado Hospital from January, 2001 to May 2004 was performed. The sample comprised 100 patientsdevided into four groups of 25 patients each; group A was administered Ketamine 0.15 mg/kg five minutes before surgical incision. By the end of surgery, 1200mg of endovenous dipyrone was given. Group B was administered Ketamine, just 1200 mg Dipyrone at the end of surgery; group C was treated the same as group A, but, in addition to that, was kept on 2400 mg - 100 mg/h dipyrone infusion; group D was previously administered Ketamine and Dipyrone when necessary. It resulted in Analgesia being significantly better in group C. Diplopia was ther most frequent adverse reaction in all study groups; 72 % group A, 88 % group C, and 76 % group D. the degree of sedation was not significant. Preventive analgesia with Ketamine is a simple method contribuiting to relieve postoperative pain.
