Introduction:

in current times there is a true epidemic of the known “chronic non-communicable diseases” worldwide: diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney disease.

Objective:

to characterize the risk factors influencing in chronic kidney disease in San Juan y Martinez municipality during 2017.

Methods:

an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted; the target group comprised 51 patients diagnosed with this disease in the period studied, coinciding this with the sample of study, patients meeting the inclusion criteria established for this research were included.

Results:

male gender predominated with ages between 50-59 years old, the toxic habits favoring the progression of chronic kidney disease up to its end-stages were alcohol addiction and smoking; high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemias were among the associated diseases; the majority of the patients suffer from this disease for more than five years and undergoing pharmacological treatment.

Conclusions:

primary prevention is basically oriented to avoid the onset of kidney diseases therefore the need for practicing healthy lifestyles should be promoted and spread.
