ABSTRACT
Introduction:
cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is defined as the sudden appearance of focal neurological signs, of presumed vascular origin, which lasts more than 24 hours or causes death. It is the third leading cause of death in developed countries, after cardiovascular and neoplastic diseases.
Objective:
to characterize the main complications of ischemic cerebrovascular disease.
Methods:
a literature review was carried out, consulting 31 bibliographic references from the PubMed, ScIELO, Scopus and EMBASE databases up to September 2021. The following keywords were used: "cerebrovascular accident", stroke, "cerebral ischemia", "brain ischemia", complication, complication. Sixty-nine articles were selected and 45 were excluded because of methodological errors.
Results:
for a better study, complications were divided into neurological and non-neurological, the latter in turn divided into two groups: infectious and non-infectious.
Conclusions:
it was concluded that the appearance of complications on many occasions causes the death of the patients and among them, endocranial hypertension, bronchopneumonia, thromboembolic disease and disorders of the internal environment stand out due to their frequency and lethality.
