Introduction: The periodontal conditions are characterized among the most common ones in human beings and frequent cause of dental morbidity and mortality. Objective: To characterize the periodontal condition and oral hygiene in patients over 15 years of age at the northern area of Sancti Spiritus municipality from July to December, 2010. Methodology: A transversal, descriptive and observational study was carried out. The population was composed by 120 patients being the sample 104 patients with inclusive criterion. The variables taken into account were age, sex, periodontal condition and oral hygiene. A periodontal rate treatment was used to determine the periodontal health condition and oral hygiene. Results: patients of 65 years old or more were the most representative. Chronic gingivitis also prevailed and the most affected group was the one between 25-34 years old, having a great effect in periodontal affections. Conclusion: gingivitis was the predominant periodontal affection.
