BETANZOS VEGA, Abel y ROMERO LOPEZ, Teresita de Jesús. El Cheve lagoon, Pinar del Río, Cuba: hydrodynamics and effects of river damming. riha [online]. 2020, vol.41, n.3, pp. 14-24. Epub 01-Dic-2020. ISSN 1680-0338.
El Cheve lagoon is a coastal water body with importance for biodiversity, and of economic value due to its contribution to oyster production in Pinar del Río, Cuba. The processes related to its hydrodynamics are important for its management. The study aims to characterize the dynamics of the El Cheve lagoon waters from the water and sales balance. The lagoon hydrodynamics depends on rainfall and evaporation, and on the average salinity in its interior and in the coastal sea, that it can benefit or affect the distribution and development of marine organisms that inhabit. Anti-estuarine flows predominated in 2014-2015, and estuarine in 2017-2018. River damming increased salinity affecting lagoon hydrodynamics and oysters production.
