Introduction:

The evaluation of scientific production is a highly valuable tool for the development of strategies directed to a better research and publication culture.

Objective:

To characterize the scientific production of Pinar del Rio province, Cuba, in the Medicine-related area in Scopus during the 2017-2021 period.

Material and Methods:

An observational, descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective bibliometric-type study was conducted in articles published by authors from Pinal del Rio province in journals indexed in Scopus datebase. The universe consisted of 86 articles. Information search strategy was used, Zotero and Bibexcel were used for metadata normalization, and VOSviewer to generate maps of term co-occurrence.

Results:

The most productive year was 2020 (31.33% of articles). There was a predominance of original articles (82.56%). Additionally, 87.24% was published in national journals where 30.24% corresponded to Revista Cubana de Medicina General Integral. Of the 27 articles that showed international collaboration, 33.35% were from Ecuador. The co-occurrence analysis allowed us to identify 69 terms with more than 4 mentions, organized in 17 clusters. The University of Medical Sciences of Pinar del Rio (40.69%) and “Pedro Borrás Astorga” University Polyclinic were among the most productive institutions.

Conclusions:

There is a low scientific production in the Medicine-related area of Scopus in Pinar del Rio, which is characterized by the publication of original articles, publication in national journals, the existence of international cooperation, and the University of Medical Sciences as the most productive institution.
