PADRON SUAREZ, Lenyer et al. Faulty tripping of electrical protection devicesphotovoltaic solar power plants connecting to Cuban Electric Power System. Energética [online]. 2023, vol.44, n.2, pp. 71-80. Epub 02-Ago-2023. ISSN 1815-5901.
Conventional power systems are confronted with continuous and gradual advance of renewable power generation. Small photovoltaic power plants are usually integrated into the medium voltage grid through multiple branch lines in branched topologies, making the study of protective measures, an important issue. Avoiding unnecessary trips not only reduces economic losses but also contributes to system´s stability. The objective of this work is to study real fault events recorded in solar power plants in Cuba that cause false tripping of the protection devices installed on the primary side of the power plants transformers. Using simulations performed in DIgSILENTPowerFactory, it was shown that when transformers are wye- delta, they become zero current sources, since this is thecondition that causes false tripping. Finally, a new transformer configuration has been applied that allows the correct operation of protection system and a reduction of the feed-in of the photovoltaic systems.
