VALENCIA ORTIZ, Andrómeda Ivette et al. Psychometric properties of the risk perception and self-care behaviors for breast cancer prevention instrument. Conrado [online]. 2022, vol.18, n.86, pp. 353-359.  Epub 02-Jun-2022. ISSN 1990-8644.

Breast cancer is a public health problem with a high incidence in women, with a significant increase in recent years. The Pan American Health Organization explains that the goal of primary prevention of breast cancer is to prevent women from developing the disease, while secondary prevention is to prevent a recurrence. Self-examination is a technique that allows knowing the breasts, sensitizing the population, and forming a self-care habit, becoming an essential procedure for timely detection and diagnosis in the initial stages. However, women often do not do so due to fear, lack of time, and lack of knowledge, with health personnel being the primary source of information. General control programs should include preventive strategies for breast cancer in awareness and early detection campaigns; if these programs' maximum benefit was reached, 50% of late detection could be avoided. Therefore, it is a priority to know the perception of risk of contracting the disease, self-care behaviors, and exploration of mothers in women. The objective of this study was to develop an evaluation instrument with good psychometric properties to be applied to women over 18 years of age, considering these variables. The Risk Perception and Self-Care Behaviors for the Prevention of Breast Cancer Instrument (PR-CONA-CM) showed good psychometric properties, allowing to know the perception of risk and behaviors of prevention and timely detection of breast cancer in women.

Palabras clave : Risk perception; timely detection; self-examination; breasts and neoplasia.
