Today's education requires the training of professionals in correspondence with social transformations that promote quality performance revealed in their modes of action. Based on the understanding of this premise, the objective of this article is to reflect on the situation of teacher training in the Dominican Republic and its challenges in the context of current scientific-technological development. The descriptive study is approached from a qualitative perspective, for which methods such as analytical-synthetic, documentary review and systematization were used for the articulation of the theoretical foundations of the subject in the study of its essences and the identification of aspects for improvement. The results reveal the need to influence the problem from the definition of policies and procedures for the development of training activities and/or professionalization of teachers and professors, in their traditional planning and decontextualized from reality, from national and international standards, as well as from the current scientific-technological development, aspects that, in the Dominican reality, limit the professional teaching performance that satisfies the modern educational paradigms that characterize society.
