Introduction:
The training of professionals graduating from the health sciences is necessary for the new functions they will fulfil once they begin their working life. In the introductory courses, topics prioritised in the different public health programmes are taught in order to maintain and improve the indicators achieved.
Objective:
To characterise the professional development and training activities given in introductory courses by all the country's universities of medical sciences to professionals graduating from health science courses.
Methods:
A descriptive study was carried out on the professional development and training activities provided as an essential part of the teaching component in introductory courses. The universe consisted of 25,409 people to be trained in the subjects of the introductory courses from 2017 to 2020. The sample consisted of 24 801 professionals.
Results:
24 801 graduates from health science careers were trained nationwide in the three introductory courses given from 2017 to 2020, 19 599 professionals from the first level of health care and 5209 from the second level.
Conclusions:
Cuba has a high amount of human resources trained in different edges of knowledge to address the main causes of morbimortality and to achieve the favourable indicators it shows today.
