O'FARRILL FERNANDEZ, Milagros et al. Proposal of an introductory course on the history of medicine in Cuba, for non Spanish speaking students. Rev EDUMECENTRO [online]. 2015, vol.7, n.1, pp. 120-133. ISSN 2077-2874.
Background: the knowledge about the history of medicine in Cuba has a particular role in the formation of non Spanish speaking students of the medical sciences, because it is a way to consolidate their comprehensive culture. Objective: to design an introductory course on the history of Cuban medicine to develop a comprehensive culture in the non Spanish speaking students. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in Sagua la Grande University Site in the academic course 2011-2012. Different methods were used: Theoretical methods: analysis- synthesis, induction-deduction. Empirical methods: review of documents and a survey was applied to the students. Mathematical methods: to process absolute and relative values. Results: the syllabuses run in the preparatory department do not contain the elements about the history of medicine in Cuba, just an introduction to the health sciences and a topic about universal medicine which included a few medical personalities, in an insufficient manner; the survey showed some difficulties about the topic on the part of the students, that's why it is proposed an introductory course as a way to foster a comprehensive culture in these students. Conclusions: the history of medicine in Cuba is a way to develop a comprehensive culture in non Spanish speaking students; the specialists valued the proposed syllabus as adequate and stood out its incidence in the formation of values and the acquisition of a comprehensive culture, as well as the updating level of the bibliography used.
