Background: the achievement of reading habits is useful for the students, a vital necessity in correspondence with their personal interests, their aesthetic likes and the incentive of their values. Objective: to value the effectiveness of a reading promotion strategy of literary texts for Hygiene and Epidemiology students of Manzanillo Medical Sciences University Site. Methods: it was carried out a descriptive investigation within the qualitative approach, in the first semester of the academic year 2014-2015. Methods of the theoretical level were used: analytic-synthetic, historical-logical and systemic-structural; and empiric ones: documental analysis, surveys in questionnaire form and an interview to key informants was applied. Results: few students visited the library and a minority requested literary texts; although all understand the importance of reading for their comprehensive general formation, they didn't assume positive attitudes; most of the key informants recognized that the institution didn't have the conditions to facilitate this work, the bibliographical stock was short in fiction materials, and they expressed that the professors not always took advantage of their classes to develop reading habits, they assured that the personnel of the library was qualified to promote this type of literature but the real conditions didn't allow it, that´s why a reading promotion strategy was elaborated. Conclusions: it was valued as effective by the experts' criteria. With its application, students and professors were motivated by the reading of literary texts, the bibliographical stock was enriched with fiction texts, and there was a bigger attendance to the library, all these aspects contributed to the strengthening of the comprehensive general formation.
