Background:

leprosy is a chronic transmissible disease, not very contagious, caused by mycobacterium leprae, it is probably the oldest of all diseases and is the second causing more disabilities after poliomyelitis.

Objective:

to deepen into the factors that contributed to the evolution of scientific knowledge of leprosy and its link with the historical development of the training process of medical students in the Dermatology subject in Cuba.

Methods:

for data collection , articles from Scielo, Google Scholar, MEDISAN and Elsevier were used, published and printed for a total of 77; Of them, 24 were selected that met the criteria of Spanish language or translated into Spanish and that addressed leprosy, its history and how it is inserted in the training process in the Medicine degree.

Development:

the factors that contributed to the historical evolution of leprosy are the migrations from the old continent to the Americas, the development of scientific knowledge from the 19th century and in Cuba, the fundamental factor that determined the scientific and educational development of Dermatology linked to leprosy was the triumph of the Revolution in 1959.

Conclusions:

the different stages of historical evolution of the disease in the world and in Cuba were determined, as well as its link with the training processes of the Medicine degree and the Dermatology subject in Cuba.
