PEREZ PELAEZ, Norma Raquel et al. Environmental education using learning-service methodology: perception of competence acquisition and impact on the community. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2019, vol.11, n.4, pp. 154-162. Epub 02-Sep-2019. ISSN 2218-3620.
This article describes the results of implementing Environmental Education with the service-learning methodology. This experience aims to promote education towards sustainable development. Engineering students in Risk Prevention of the fifth year worked with 6 community partners of Coquimbo (Chile). In accordance with the needs identified in the SCs, the students conducted environmental education workshops on topics such as water care, disposal of solid waste (recycling) and organic waste (composting) and the problems associated with the accumulation of garbage (pests, diseases, fires). The results of these workshops showed that the students applied the theoretical content while reinforcing skills and abilities for sustainability such as critical thinking and social responsibility. Additionally, they generated positive changes in the SCs, which became aware of their responsibility to care for the environment, strengthened their capacities to continue environmental work and were empowered as participants in sustainable change.
