BARANANO MARTIN, Francisco Tomás; ABREUS MORA, Jorge Luis; GONZALEZ CURBELO, Vivian Bárbara  y  BERNAL VALLADARES, Ernesto Julio. Speed of walking as a prescriber of falls in older adults. Sport center # 1, Cienfuegos. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.2, pp. 103-109.  Epub 02-Abr-2020. ISSN 2218-3620.

The preservation of walking is an important requirement for a satisfactory old age. The objective of this work is to evaluate the speed of walking as a prescriber of falls in older adults active in the Circles of Grandparents of the Sport Center # 1 of Cienfuegos through the Test of walking 15 meters at the preferred and maximum speed. Out of a population of 259, the test was applied to 38 active older adults, 95% were female, and 67.5% were between the ages of 60-69 years. The statistical procedure was carried out by means of a descriptive analysis of frequencies and percentages of the designed variables. The relationship between age and sex variables was verified by Pearson's Chi-Square test. The results showed that: 75% of older adults suffered from a disease, 87% had some injury that affected the balance, 50% suffered some fall in the last year and 87% performed physical exercises three or four times a week. The 90% of the AM maintained an inadequate speed of the march at a preferred pace and 97% at maximum speed, 100% showed an inadequate stride length at both speeds. It was concluded that the elderly has an inadequate gait, both for the preferred speed and for the maximum, which shows changes in the peripheral and somatosensory components that determine the balance.
