GOMEZ MOREJON, Aymahara; PEREZ GONZALEZ, Lidia  y  CHAVIANO MENDOZA, Ortelio. Nephrotic Syndrome in Pediatrics: an Impact on Childhood. Rev. Finlay [online]. 2019, vol.9, n.1, pp. 20-25. ISSN 2221-2434.

Background:

nephrotic syndrome is a condition that can lead to kidney failure from an early age. It is necessary to identify and treat the signs and symptoms of this disease in time in order to avoid future complications.

Objective:

to describe the clinical-epidemiological characteristics and the response to the treatment of children with nephrotic syndrome treated at the Pediatric University Hospital Paquito González Cueto de Cienfuegos in the period 2008-2018.

Methods:

a retrospective descriptive study was conducted in the Paquito González Cueto University Hospital of Cienfuegos in the period 2008-2018. For this study, patients diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome residents in the different municipalities of Cienfuegos province in the last 11 years were selected in the study period from January 2008 to December 2018, with a universe of 23 patients. The clinical and demographic variables studied were described. For collecting and analyzing the results, the SPSS 15,0 program was used, which allowed the processing, statistical analysis and preparation of the output tables.

Results:

the male sex was the most affected (65,2 %); the age of the disease onset predominated in the 3 to 6 years age group (52,2 %). Edema was present in all cases, followed often by oliguria (86,9 %); in 100 % of the patients, hypo-albuminuria and proteinuria were present, followed by hypercholesterolemia (95,6 %). A 73,9 % of the patients were cortico-sensitive. Respiratory infections were the most common complications (73,9 %).

Conclusions:

male sex predominated in the ages between 2 and 6 years; with a favorable prognosis in 90 % of patients with good response to steroid treatment; however, cortic-resistance represents between 10 and 20 % of children and the most frequent complications are infections.
