The changes generated in universities at a global level, in terms of their increase in size, diversification of services and activities and their increasingly close link with society and its development, have made the higher education scenario more complex. This growth in universities has been directly proportional to the demands of improving their management. In this direction, this research aims to expose the need to integrate the record management into the university management, as a guarantee of efficiency, effectiveness, transparency, responsible accountability, internal control and risk management. For this, the analytical-synthetic method was used in the study of the theoretical references of record management, its current trends, impact on university management and the description of the current Cuban scenario in this matter. In this way, the results deal with the relevance of developing a serious document management, to guarantee the quality of information that is generated as a result of the functions and legal obligations of the universities. However, in Cuban universities, awareness of the value of records for their efficiency, effectiveness, institutional strengthening and quality of their processes is still low.
