Resumen

QUEVEDO CIERRA, Marta Raquel  y  GARCIA GONZALEZ, Maryuri. Humanistic training in engineering at the University of El Salvador. A historical sketch. RP [online]. 2023, vol.11, n.3, pp. 47-63.  Epub 08-Mar-2024. ISSN 2308-3042.

Engineering careers within the University of El Salvador were conceived as part of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in the 1960s. However, there is a whole historical evolution that spans from the beginnings of the University in the 19th century when the first Engineering courses were developed in the Faculty of Arts. This historical outline aims to identify the moments in the development of engineering at the University of El Salvador when strengthening the humanistic component in its education was considered, as well as the periods and circumstances that led to the current neglect of such education. Primary and secondary historical sources were consulted to conduct a logical historical analysis of engineering education at the University of El Salvador. Among the main findings, a historical tendency to train professionals with extensive technical knowledge that contributes to the development of infrastructure and processes in the country is identified, while neglecting the humanistic component in their education. It is concluded that a historical perspective on the development of engineering within the university will allow, in future research, a reconsideration of how to strengthen the humanistic component in accordance with the most pressing needs of today's society.
