PEINO CALERO, Eric; VARELA DE LA ROSA, Alis y BERMUDEZ SOUZA, Yinelys. Locally intense rains associated with severe local storms. Synoptic and mesoscale conditions. Rev. Cubana Met. [online]. 2020, vol.26, n.1 Epub 01-Mar-2020. ISSN 2664-0880.
From thirty cases of study were determined the synoptic and mesoscale conditions that favored the occurrence of locally intense rains associated with Severe Local Storms (TLS) in the central and eastern regions of Cuba during the rainy season. Five fundamental synoptic configurations were identified characterized by an environment of weak vertical wind shear in the surface layer - 500 hPa and a predominance of high relative humidity values at low levels with a dry layer at medium levels. The analysis of the satellite images, the radar observations and the outputs of the WRF model showed that the convective cells that caused a locally intense rain event in combination with a severe event were characterized by having large centroid echoes in the vertical by above the isotherm of 0ºC and in its dissipation the centroid echoes of maximum reflectivity were below 5 km in height, generated mainly by the interaction of the horizontal convective rolls with the sea breeze front.
