Introduction:

infantile cerebral palsy is the most common cause of motor disability during childhood. Botulinum toxin type A is considered one of the main treatment choices in neurological diseases with spasticity. It has not been done any research about its effectiveness in our hospital.

Objective:

to evaluate the effectiveness of botulinum toxin type A as a treatment of children with spastic infantile cerebral palsy. To identify in the response, a possible synergic action among botulinum toxin type A, physiotherapy and concomitant pharmacologic treatment.

Methods:

a longitudinal analytic study was conducted. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 21 version was used in data analysis. Wilcoxon´s no parametric test was performed.

Results:

after last application of botulinum toxin type A, spasticity, functionality, and physical dependence presented an improvement in all patients, which was a higher statistical significate (p=0,000). Such improvement (p<0,05) was similar in both groups, those who had a concomitant oral baclofen treatment and those who did not have it, without any statistical differences between groups.

Conclusion:

botulinum toxin type A was effective as a treatment of patients with spastic infantile cerebral palsy.
