Woman care in a critical stage requires of improvement of gynecological and obstetrical services and of intensive care to reduce mother mortality as well as the potential sequelae caused by affections presented by women during this life stage. Trying to achieve always a greater quality in services, we made a research on its behavior. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the behavior of critical mothers. METHODS: A cross-sectional, retrospective and descriptive study was made to analyze the morbidity and mortality course in critical mothers, seen in Intensive Unit of the Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas gynecological and obstetrical services from January, 2004 to December, 2008. RESULTS: A total of 16 737 women were seen who ending its pregnancy with a satisfactory birth, from these, 187 cases were admitted in Intensive Therapy Unit representing a admission rate of 1,1%; from women whose pregnancy ended in abortion (spontaneous or induced) 10,838 were assisted, 12 were admitted as severe cases (0,1%). Main causes of admission included: hypertensive disease (21,8), heart disease (19,0%), massive hemorrhages (17,5%). There was a direct and indirect death cause of 1,8 by 1000 birth lives. CONCLUSIONS: The morbidity in critical mothers was represented by: preeclampsia-eclampsia, acquired hearth diseases and massive hemorrhages.
