FERNANDEZ ARNER, Agustín y KOHAN, Augusto German. Marxism and Ecological Crisis. Econ. y Desarrollo [online]. 2017, vol.158, n.1, pp. 26-40. ISSN 0252-8584.
Ecological crisis affecting the earth has aroused government, media, and citizen interest. Global and local challenges have been discussed at international forums and summits, but approaches adopted and agreements reached are far from finding effective solutions to this crisis. Could these solutions be found within the framework of capitalist system? The answer is no. Capitalist system is based on making and maximizing profit, no matter whether resources to be used are renewable or not. Consequently, there is an antagonism of its fundamental dynamic forces of development to its patterns of overexploitation. Contemporary Marxism considers a solution based on a transition to a socialist society. A different political and socioeconomic paradigm is the only sustainable solution.
