PUERTA RODRIGUEZ, Hilda Elena. The European Union in the Last Fifty Years. Some Considerations on Achievements, Failures and Challenges. Econ. y Desarrollo [online]. 2021, vol.165, n.2 Epub 09-Mar-2021. ISSN 0252-8584.
There is no doubt that the European Economic Community (1958), which became the European Union in 1995, is the integrationist scheme with the greatest global scope in the modern era. However, its evolution has not been free of ups and downs, expressing the very contradictions inherent to the phenomenon and the manifestation of the different realities faced by its members over time. There are many examples of the actions implemented by the European project with a view to strengthening its global hegemonic role, but the Common Agricultural Policy, the implementation of the euro as the common currency of a large part of the members and the increase in the number of participants stand out for their scope and implications. The analysis of these three aspects constitutes the main objective of this paper, from which the connotation of the process and its multiple global consequences are derived.
