In Ecuador, agriculture constitutes the livelihood of many of its inhabitants. This activity concentrates a large mass of small peasant farmers who try to coexist with the large national and transnational agri-food chains. This work presents a preliminary advance of an investigation that tries to determine what are the causes that keep this significant sector of the Ecuadorian population, called subsistence family agriculture, in a state of poverty. To this end, various theoretical positions regarding agriculture as an activity are systematized and the peasant as beneficiary of said activity in the Ecuadorian context. Determined that they face a series of multidimensional problems, where the gaps and inequalities are significant.
