Much of the work of Cuban intellectual Laura Mestre Hevia (1867-1944) is dedicated to the study of Hellenic culture. A clear proof of this can be seen in her translations of the two great Homeric poems, a task in which she stands out as the only Latin American woman to carry out such an arduous task in its entirety. Hence the denomination of “Hellenist par excellence” that was granted to her. Another example of her affection and interest for the Greek world can be seen in one of the books she published during her lifetime, Greek Studies (1929), an example where she defended and promulgated the ethical and moral values present in some of the literary works of this culture and, by extension, advocated by its inhabitants. The present work intends, in the first place, to pay tribute to the figure of the Cuban intellectual on the 75th anniversary of her physical disappearance. In addition, it seeks to highlight the classical evocations in Cuban culture and to comment on the tools used by Mestre to make visible and inculcate in the potential readers of Greek Studies the values of this society, to which she attaches great importance and, therefore, proposed that they be followed as worthy models and designated as a suitable object of study for the formation of the new generations.
