To identify a group of basic teaching competencies of professors working at “Dr. Ignacio Chavez” Faculty of Medicine, which is the main objective of this paper, theoretical and empirical methods were used. A selected sample of professors and students was surveyed. Statistical procedures for the analysis of results and design of tables were also used. Based on the detection of learning needs of the surveyed professors as far as leading of teaching-learning process is concerned and on the theoretical references on this topic, a more comprehensive analysis was made to assess collected data, which allowed characterizing those professors under study as to basic teaching competencies inherent to relevant formative management. The latest methodological principles about the formation of human resources in higher education, particularly in higher medical education, were considered
