There are several factors in the clinical practice that make it difficult to detect the adverse reactions to drugs. Pharmacovigilance is used to prevent drug risks for human beings and to avoid the economic cost associated to unwanted adverse effects. Such vigilance is kept by the pharmacovigilance systems in the context of daily practice. It is considered necessary in each country since there exist differences among countries (and even among regions in some countries) in terms of adverse drug reaction manifestations and other problems so related, which may derive from the differences in manufacture, distribution and use (for example, indications, doses and availability). Taking into account the general low incidence of adverse drug reaction reporting from hospitals in general and from ophthalmology specialty in particular, a multicenter cooperation should be kept for notification of adverse reactions caused by the use of drugs to the ophthalmology services. The development of a pharmacovigilance program in a hospital demands the compliance with basic requirements in the technical, ethical and general and interhospital coordination areas.
