This study was aimed at showing some applications of the mortality statistics based on the concepts of excesive and premature mortality. To make this analysis it was used the mortality of Cuba in 1995. The standardized mortality ratio indicators were calculated as well as the ratio of potential years of life lost for all causes and for selected causes, comparing them with mortality in Cuba in 1981 in order to know the achievements, and with a developed country, Canada, in 1992, so as to determine the potential reserves of reduction. Deaths ocurred in Cuba during 1995 accounted for 98,1 % of the expected ones. If the mortality of 1981 would have been mantained, 2 % of deaths had been avoided. On comparing deaths with Canada, with more favorable rates, ours exceeded in 18,4 % with a great reserve of reduction, but with real possibilities of attaining them, since most of the causes analyzed may be avoided starting from actions directed to modify life habits and styles.
