The universe was comprised of 308 patients who belonged to the medical offices numbers "39 and 49" in the mentioned health area. The sample was constituted by the patients that met the criteria of suffering from metabolic syndrome (n=135). These patients were submitted to a questioning, a complete physical and laboratory complementary examinations. The variables analyzed were: number of patients, age bracket, sex, personal and familial pathological history, educational and socioeconomic levels. The risk factors and the complications of the syndrome were analyzed. A database was prepared to carry out the statistical process by means of counting and percentage distribution. The prevalence of the syndrome was high; the group of ages between 50-59 and female sex prevailed. Hypercholesteremia was the most frequent risk factor; heart disease and diabetes were the prevailing complications. Conclusions: metabolic syndrome was frequent in the population studied, a great association between the risk factors and their influence over the elevated prevalence of complications were observed.
