Introduction: the quality of performance of the nursing personnel is one of the fundamental aspects in the surgical units. Objective: to evaluate the quality of competence and performance in the use of equipment and the preparation of the surgical unit before a minimal-access surgery. Material and method: an applied research of educative, prospective and longitudinal intervention was carried out during the year 2013 in the surgical unit of Pepe Portilla Provincial Pediatric Hospital of Pinar del Río (Cuba). Survey and observational methods were comparatively applied in two periods separated by a training course. 21 nurses were included. Results: the early diagnosis produced an average qualification of 66.2 points, while the final one produced 84.5 points; (X2 McNemar=18.05; p=0.0001) raising the level of knowledge about the nurses’ performance regarding the management of endoscopic surgery after the training course elaborated from detected learning needs. Conclusions: the quality of performance was managed to be evaluated and maintained in the nursing personnel working in the surgical unit, regarding the correct practicing of the techniques of minimal-access surgery, achieving better care of the patients and elevating their quality of life.
