This paper begins by presenting major features of current fixed and variable interest rates, then deals with the phenomenon of dematerialization which refers to the substitution of paper-form securities by book-entry securities. Dematerialization of securities such as stocks has been a major trend in developed countries, and is rapidly gaining in importance in Latin America as well.
