Resumen
MORERA GOMEZ, Yasser et al. Annual variability of atmospheric fluxes of major and trace elements in Cienfuegos in the last 11 years (2011-2021). Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.5, pp. 295-303. Epub 30-Oct-2022. ISSN 2218-3620.
Atmospheric depositions are considered the major pathway by which atmospheric pollution is transferred to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. However, in Cuba they have been little studied. In this work, the annual atmospheric fluxes of trace and major elements were determined in three stations of Cienfuegos municipality (rural, urban and sub-urban), and the temporal variability in recent years (2011-2021) and their environmental implications were evaluated. The highest fluxes for the elements studied were obtained in the urban area and its periphery, where the highest emissions associated with traffic and industrial activity are concentrated. The elements Br, S, Zn, Pb, Mo, V, Cu, As, P, Ca and Ni showed high enrichments, indicating a marked anthropogenic influence. It was found that the atmospheric fluxes of these elements experienced a decrease in the last decade, similar to the trend observed for annual precipitation. The fluxes of V and Ni, in contrast, experienced a significant increase, which seems to be related to an increase in the impact of emissions from oil combustion. These results constitute the first comprehensive report in Cuba on time series of atmospheric fluxes.Key words: atmospheric depositions, heavy metals, nutrient and pollutant fluxes, annual trends, Cuba.
