Introduction:

chronic kidney disease affects a great part of the population in the world. Its diagnosis in the initial stages allows a better management of the disease, better prognosis and better quality of life.

Objective:

to compare the health status of patients with chronic kidney disease at the time of starting hemodialysis according to the influence of early or late remission to the Nephrology Specialist.

Methods:

a descriptive and cross-sectional observational study was carried out on a population of 348 patients who started renal replacement therapy in hemodialysis at the “Arnaldo Milián Castro” Hospital during the study period; the Chi-square distribution was used for statistical analysis.

Results:

there was a predominance of male patients, older than 60 years old, with a late referral to hemodialysis. In 40.8% of the cases the cause was diabetes and 65.56% of the late referrals required an urgent dialysis. In both study groups were showed alterations in hemochemistry values and glomerular filtration rate and albumin were those with more variability. Patients with tardy referral were those who presented more comorbidities and 51.5% were not dispensed.

Conclusions:

patients with a late remission to the Nephrology Specialist are those who most need emergency hemodialysis and emergency temporary vascular access, as well as those who most often have hypertension associated with their underlying disease, and most of them are not seen by their family doctor.
