CRUZ CARRAZANA, Carlos Enrique et al. Prognostic factors for mortality in pediatric patients with sepsis. Acta méd centro [online]. 2022, vol.16, n.1, pp. 103-112. Epub 31-Mar-2022. ISSN 2709-7927.
Introduction:
sepsis is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in pediatric age that requires adequate management for its treatment.
Objective:
to determine the prognostic factors for mortality in pediatric patients with sepsis treated in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the José Luis Miranda University Pediatric Hospital in the period between January 2018 and February 2019.
Methods:
analytical observational study of cases and controls. Population: pediatric patient with sepsis, treated in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the José Luis Miranda University Pediatric Hospital during the study period (n=142). Two groups were established for each variable, one with the prognostic factor present (case group) (n=30) and another without it (control group) (n=60).
Results:
the multivariate analysis identified as prognostic factors of mortality the presence of comorbidities (p=0.006), the need for ventilation (p=0.000), albumin levels (p=0.002), sepsis status (p=0.008), for multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (p=0.000), hospital stay (p=0.006); which were significantly higher in the case group.
Conclusions:
the presence of comorbidities, the need for ventilation, albumin levels, sepsis status, multi-organ dysfunction syndrome, and hospital stay are independent predictors of mortality in pediatric patients diagnosed with sepsis.
