A descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study was conducted aimed at describing the characteristics of the behavior of adverse events to drugs in the elderly receiving attention at a Family Medicine Unit of the Mexican Social Security Institute in Tepic, Nayarit. The sample was composed of 248 aged persons from February to July, 2006. The data were obtained by an instrument of information collection, medical history and data provided by the physicians. 69 adverse events to drugs were identified. The pharmacological groups most related to adverse events were the used in cardiovascular affections (40.5 %), musculoskeletal affections (27.5 %) and endocrine affections (10.1 %). The gastrointestinal system was the most affected. The high frequency and characteristics of the adverse events, similar to the reported in the systematic reviews of world medical literature, were proved. The multivariate logistic regression showed association between the adverse event and polypharmacy, which is considered as a high risk factor in the world
