A descriptive, prospective and lineal study of a series of 39 patients over 65 who underwent thoracotomy as part ot the surgical procedure at "Manuel Fajardo" Teaching Hospital from 1994 to 2001, was made. 79.5 % were males and 77 % had diseases associated with arterial hypertension, ischemic heart disease, peripheral vascular failure and respiratory disorders. The most frequent indications were the oncoproliferative diseases of lung, esophagus and cardias, the pleuropulmonar supuration, the subpleural vesicles and the emphysematous bullae. The incisions used were the axillary vertical and the posterolateral. 36 % had medical complications, whereas 12 % had surgical complications, with an operative mortality of 10.2 %
