With the recent introduction of the continual monitoring of the ST segment in our environment, we have a valuable tool for the early detection of perioperative myocardial ischemia. The rutinary use of this technique in high risk patients will allow us to make an early diagnosis of this complication, to establish the necessary treatment in each case and to contribute to the prevention of acute myocardial infarction during the time the patient is anesthetized. An updated review of this novel technique and of the treatment of perioperative ischemia is presented
